What Is The Significance Of The Hinokami Kagura Dance in ‘Demon Slayer’

Demon Slayer is not only an action-oriented anime but also a visual treat to the viewers, especially the Kagura Dance in the anime caught hold of a lot of attention since its release.

Koyoharu Gotouge’s ‘Demon Slayer’ is a very appetizing anime in the form of action, drama, plot, and visual treats. Often compared to its competitor the Jujutsu Kaizen, the visuals of this anime are much crisp and clean, leaving the latter in the dust. No need for resentment, as both of these anime, excel in certain categories, one of them being the winner of the visuals.

The Hinokami Kagura Dance is portrayed in the anime as a dance offered to the gods to appease them and to be aware of their health and diseases. This dance is further elevated to suit the fighting style of each of the pupils, making the dance form a diverse story. It is also noted that Tanjiro Kamado learned this dancing style from his late father Tanjuro Kamado.

The Hinokami Kagura Dance also known as the Dance of the Fire God. this legendary dance form was passed down in the Kamado family from generation to generation, along with the Hanafuda earrings. Later revealed as the First Breathing Style, the Sun Breathing, this dance form is very powerful against any demons.

In the anime, Tanjuro is shown offering this dance to the Sun God from sunset till dawn, repeating the twelve dance steps over and over again. It’s the first breathing style ever created, and all other forms emerged from it. The first to develop the sun-breathing form was Tanjiro’s ancestor Yoriichi Tsugikuni.

He later passed it on to his pupils in different combat forms to match their own pace. Yoriichi was a legendary demon slayer who perfected the dance, and whose talent and strength were unparalleled. As per the manga, the Sun Breathing form is only mastered by four members of the Kamado family – Yoriichi, Sumiyoshi, Tanjuro, and Tanjiro (later on).

Earlier in the Demon Slayer era, twins were considered a bad omen. Yoriichi had a twin brother Michikatsu who later transformed into a demon. Though at first, Yoriichi’s father tried to kill him for having a weird birthmark on his forehead, it was later revealed that the mark was a sign of Sun Breathers.

Jealous and scared of Yoriichi’s talent, his brother decided to turn into a demon after being persuaded by Muzan, to take the name Kokushibo. Thereafter Kokushibo starts killing one after another Breathing style users, apart from Sumiyoshi, who starts passing this technique only to his family members under the name of Hinakami Kagura.

To eradicate the Sun Breathing style users, Kokushibo masters a technique opposite to it, known as the Moon Breathing Style. The Sun Breathing technique later comes in to save Tanjiro and Nezoku in the fight with the Spider Demon. Tanjiro also discovers that he’s more comfortable using this technique rather than Water Breathing.

The Sun Breathing form has twelve dance steps, each focused on destroying Muzan’s vital organs in a rapid manner while letting its users perform the dance limitlessly. It increases stamina, accuracy, and agility, but was a step behind killing Muzan.

To eliminate the demon, Yoriichi develops the Thirteen hidden form of the Sun Breathing. His fight with Muzan enables the former to leave deep marks on his body, which Muzan couldn’t get rid of. He was nearly at death’s door, so he fears Tanjiro and pursues to eliminate him in case of any future interruptions to his plan.
