“An Actor On That Show Spit In My Face”: ‘Prison Break’ Star Sarah Wayne Callies Opens Up About The “Rampant Misogyny” On Show’s Sets

Misogyny has long been an issue that is as prominent in Hollywood as it is anywhere else. While there have been many actresses who have spoken up against the issues they had to face because of rampant sexism on film and TV show sets, the problems persist in more cases than one may imagine.

In another such revelation, Sarah Wayne Callies from ‘Prison Break‘ has come forward narrating some bad experiences while filming the hit show. Being a male-dominated show, most of its cast members were also men, except for Wayne herself. In a recent interview, she opened up about how it ended up becoming a challenge to navigate her work as the only woman on the sets. Here’s what she said.

Sarah Wayne Callies was speaking during an interview on Rachel Bilson’s podcast ‘Broad Ideas‘, when she opened up about the “rampant misogyny” and the difficulties she faced being “the only woman around” on the set of the Fox show,’ Prison Break‘.

The actress made some startling revelations about the hostile environment on the set as she recalled a particularly shocking incident when a co-star spat in her face. “I mean, like, I’ve had an actor on that show spit in my face. And I was like, ‘Holy s***,'” Callies said, leaving Bilson and her co-host Olivia Allen surprised.

Though she had some disturbing experiences during her time on the sets of the show, Callies said that not all her co-stars were problematic. “Some of the guys were great, and some of them were totally gentlemen,” she clarified, without naming anyone.

As she narrated her ordeal further, Callies shed light on some deeper issues she plans to explore on her rewatch podcast ‘Prison Breaking‘, which she co-hosts with cast member Paul Adelstein. “We will talk about it someday, but there were… There were things. Like, I would go home some nights and have to spend an hour talking my husband out of going to hospitalize somebody,” she said during the podcast.

Prison Break’ originally aired for four seasons from 2005 to 2009 and concluded with a TV film titled ‘The Final Break‘.  The show was also resurrected by Fox in 2017 for a limited nine-episode series.

Known for its intense plot and dramatic twists, ‘Prison Break‘ had a talented cast including stars like Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Paul Adelstein, Rockmond Dunbar, Robert Knepper, and Amaury Nolasco, among others.

callies also opened up about the reasons she decided to revisit the series through her podcast. “I didn’t want it to send me into a spiral of, like, ‘What did I let them do to me? What did I let them say to me? What did I put up with? What did I not report?'” she explained. She therefore went ahead with the idea and her podcast continues to receive good responses from the show’s fans and well as people from other fraternities interested in exploring the gender dynamics at play in Hollywood.
