Christina Applegate has outed one of the biggest celebrity stories on Hollywood’s award-show circuit. In her memoir, ‘You With the Sad Eyes,’ the actress revealed the identity of the rock star she left Brad Pitt for at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards.
The moment had fueled speculation for years, especially after Applegate famously refused to name the mystery man during a television appearance in 2015. Now, she has even shared how Pitt reacted to being left behind.
Christina Applegate Admits She Walked Out With a Rock Star
In ‘You With the Sad Eyes‘, Applegate revisited the night that became one of the most talked-about stories from her early years in Hollywood. She recalled inviting Brad Pitt to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles after the pair had been “platonic pals for the longest time.”

At the time, Applegate was just 17 years old and enjoying the success of ‘Married… with Children‘. She attended the ceremony wearing a Ceil Chapman gown and wrote that she felt so good about herself that evening that she made a bold decision by the end of the night. “In fact,” she wrote, “I felt so powerful and sure of myself for once that when the awards show was over, I left with Sebastian Bach, not Brad Pitt“.
Applegate revealed that the mystery man was none other than Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach. The actress admitted that she had been watching the rock singer throughout the evening and was drawn to him during the event.
The Awkward Aftermath That Brad Pitt Never Forgot
Applegate noted that back then, Pitt was still trying to establish himself as an actor, “and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.” His career-changing role in ‘Thelma & Louise‘ would arrive two years later in 1991.

The actress explained that after she left with Bach, Pitt ended up driving her mother and a friend home. Applegate wrote that he “was left to sullenly drive” them back after being unexpectedly abandoned at the awards show.
The incident had lasting consequences. Applegate admitted that Pitt was not happy about what happened and that the awkward moment affected their friendship for years. “Not surprisingly, [he] was subsequently very mad at me. We didn’t talk for many years after that,” she wrote.
Looking back, she acknowledged that Pitt had deserved better treatment. She added, “Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid. And though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.” For years, Applegate refused to reveal the identity of the man she left Pitt for.
