Cillian Murphy Would Be Seen In A Completely Different Avatar In ’28 Days Later’
Tom Rothman was speaking at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 when he revealed that Danny Boyle’s upcoming horror film ‘28 Days Later‘ will re-cast Cillian Murphy in the lead role. But that’s not all. There’s a twist.
Later the same day, Rothnam opened up about Murphy’s role in the third part of the trilogy during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Asked if the news of him starring in the film is confirmed, he answered with an affirmative, but revealed that it’s not just another role Murphy would be playing.
“Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way,” Rothman said, adding that the filmmaker is going to give his best to the film, and with a stellar actor such as Murphy in the lead, fans should expect something extraordinary.
“This is Danny at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it,” he said during the interview.

All We Know About Cillian Murphy’s Role In ’28 Days Later’
As per Sony’s announcement, the film would be the third part in line with 2007 film ’28 Weeks Later’, which followed t original film released in 2002. When the news was announced on May 10, Cillian Murphy was cited as the executive producer of the film. However, the statement at Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that he’ll also be the lead actor in the movie.
Though the Sony executive has confirmed the news, neither Cillian Murphy nor Danny Boyle’s representatives have later given any statement about the film. It is set for release sometime in 2025, while the production details remain scarce for now.
The Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer’ star has been a part of the first two films of the franchise where he played the character of bicycle courier Jim. His character wakes up from a coma to find out that he’s in a apocalyptic world with most people turned into zombies because of a virus.
It’s not yet clear if he will continue to play the same role in the third part or get a change of character.
Given his recent success in ‘Oppenheimer‘, followed by his iconic portrayal of Thomas Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders‘, Murphy’s face value attached with the film will certainly set the bars high for ‘28 years later‘.
