“I’m A Very Proud Irish Man”: Cillian Murphy Wins His First Oscar After An “Exhilarating” ‘Oppenheimer’ Journey

The 2024 Oscars marked a phenomenal win for ‘Oppenheimer‘, as the film secured several awards including one for Best Picture. Two legendary actors who are regarded as some of the greatest and most talented in Hollywood — Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. — both secured their first Oscar wins this awards season.

In the momentous victory, 47-year-old Cillian Murphy secured his first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars held on Sunday. Murphy’s stellar performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed biopic was a highly anticipated and rather expected win. But Murphy was a little “overwhelmed” to have received it.

As Cillian Murphy gave a heartfelt acceptance speech after being named the Best Actor of the year, he got emotional on stage. Murphy expressed gratitude to Nolan, the Academy, and everyone involved in the creative journey.

It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say,” he said. Acknowledging the ‘Oppenheimer cast and crew, he said, “Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member, on Oppenheimer; you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly.”

Murphy further extended his appreciation to his “incredible team” and his family, particularly his wife Yvonne McGuinness and their sons Malachy and Aran who were present in the audience. “I love you so much, and I’m a very proud Irish man standing here tonight,” he declared.

As he concluded his speech, Murphy dedicated his award to peacemakers worldwide as he highlighted the impact of the film on Oppenheimer’s legacy. “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb. And for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere,” he said.

Murphy was up against some formidable contenders, including Bradley Cooper for ‘Maestro’, Colman Domingo for ‘Rustin’, Paul Giamatti for ‘The Holdovers’, and Jeffrey Wright for ‘American Fiction’. Before Oscars, Murphy also bagged the awards during Golden Globes, BAFTAs, SAG Awards, and other prestigious ceremonies earlier in the year.

His co-star, Robert Downey Jr. — who also clinched the Best Supporting Actor Oscar on the same night — praised Murphy’s commitment. “I have never witnessed a greater sacrifice by a lead actor in my career,” he said.
