Dakota Fanning and her sister, Elle Fanning, are the perfect image of power siblings in Hollywood. They have been ruling the screens since they were kids and as adults, they have carved a niche for themselves with as much charm and ease as they had shown when they were little. Their bond and values are certainly strong, but when it comes to family, they have royal ties too. They are direct descendants of King Edward III and distantly related to Princess Of Wales, Kate Middleton.

While there’s no dearth of celebrities related to the royal family in one way or another, this revelation turned out to be a happy surprise for the Fannings. The sisters have portrayed princesses on screen, but their ancestry certainly gives them a real edge in their reel commitments.

Historians of Ancestry.com have linked Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning to Britain’s royal family. According to the research that took into account 700 years’ worth of historical records documenting census records, birth and death certificates, baptism and burial records, the Fannings have descended from King Edward III who ruled England for 50 years, from 1327-1377, after ascending to the throne at the age of 14. The connection comes through their mother Heather Joy Arrington’s side. While the King’s reign was controversial and plagued by wars, he is remembered in the British Past. He was also responsible for the brutal 100 years of war between England and France.

Michelle Ercanbrack, a family historian for the website that helps people access and understand their genealogy, told People about the conclusion: “Generation after generation, the lines we looked at pieced back directly to King Edward III proving that Elle is a direct descendant of royalty. You can consider her a long-lost princess. This connection is so unique and rare.”

Not only this, Dakota and Elle Fanning are also related to Kate Middleton once we search through the annals of history. Carole Middleton, the mother of Princess of Wales, is the granddaughter of King Edward III. So, there goes another relation to the royals for the Fanning sisters.

Ties to the royal family can get anyone excited. When Dakota Fanning found out about her blue blood, she spoke with enthusiasm shared by her sister, Elle, too. In conversation with E! News, she beamed at the ‘Maleficent‘ premiere in 2014, “It’s so weird. I saw it the other day. My cousins called me up and they were like, ‘Look online!’ I looked online and like King Edward III is my great great-great-grandfather. I was like, ‘Is this real?‘”

When asked about her reaction to being the 21st cousin of Kate Middleton, Fanning couldn’t believe the fact, deeming it “crazy.” But, she admitted that she was always curious about her family and the inquisitiveness took a backseat between her work commitments. However, the news delighted her. “I’ve always wanted to do the ancestry.com thing because I think it would be really cool. But someone did it for me, which I think is great,” she added.

Other celebrities who have been found to have royal ancestry include Johnny Depp, Hilary Duff, Kit Harington, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Hugh Grant, among others.
