Deborah Ann Woll has opened up about one of the most painful parts of her childhood. The ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ actress revealed that she was ignored by her classmates. She was even labeled “the ugliest girl in school,” an experience that deeply affected her confidence.

Although years have passed and she has built a successful acting career and family life, Woll admitted that those harsh words still influence how she sees herself.

During the ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ season 2 launch event in New York City, Woll shared that childhood bullying continues to affect the way she sees herself. Even after years of success, she admitted that those early experiences still influence her confidence.

I was bullied pretty terribly when I was a kid. Even to this day, so much of my identity and what I think of myself is formed by those kids,” she said.

Woll has previously spoken in greater detail about what school was like for her. She said she was often left out by classmates and struggled to fit in. “Usually, either was ignored or sort of shunned for it. When I was very wildly unpopular, I stopped talking for a while because everything I said seemed to illicit. It was some kind of insult or backlash.”

Although school was difficult, Woll never lost her love for performing. She said that joining a school play was the turning point that helped her step out of the silence. “But I always loved acting and singing and dancing, so I went out for the play. I don’t know why in the 7th grade…and that was the only time I talked at school,” she recalled.

That decision changed much more than her school experience. Woll said the theater group gave her a place where she finally felt accepted. “When I finally came back out of my shell, it was with those kids, and they became my lifelong best friends.”

Looking back today, she believes her younger self would never have imagined the life she has built. “While I wish I was maybe farther along than I am, I do think about the fact that I do this job, that I put myself out there, that I’m a parent and a spouse. These are all things that maybe that 13 or 14-year-old kid wouldn’t have believed were possible.”

Woll is back as Karen Page in ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ after playing the character in the original Daredevil series from 2015 to 2018. She also appeared in ‘The Defenders‘ and ‘The Punisher‘ before returning for the new series.
