A Timeline of Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder’s Relationship
Johnny and Winona were ‘The’ couple of the 90s and everyone was absolutely obsessed with them. The two met in New York during a film premiere and for Depp, it was love at first sight as he told Rolling Stone, “It was a classic glance, like, the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.” It didn’t take the two much time to fall in love and they got engaged within five months of dating while they starred opposite each other in ‘Edward Scissorhands’. While talking about Johnny, the ’Stranger Things’ actress said, “I thought maybe he would be a jerk. I didn’t know. But he was really, really shy.”
However, the news of their breakup took the entire industry by storm, no one saw it coming because the two seemed so deeply devoted to each other that a breakup was the last thing anyone expected or anticipated. The two called off their engagement in June 1993 and Johnny told Los Angeles Times that media pressure was one of the major reasons behind their breakup. Whereas Winona described her breakup with Johnny as the “first heartbreak” as she was only 17 years old when she met him and 19 when they broke up.

What Happened To The ‘Winona Forever’ Tattoo?
After the superstar couple split up, Johnny changed his tattoo from ‘Winona forever’ to ‘Wino forever’. He also declared that he did not regret getting his ex’s name inked on his body. During an appearance on Australia Tonight Johnny said, “It’s no longer there. We’ve split up. “I think these things, to me — these tattoos, for me — are a journal. I wear my journal. Even though we’re not together anymore, it doesn’t take away the honesty of the moment when I got the tattoo. I don’t regret that tattoo at all, in fact, it’s a part of my past.”
During his legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny made a shocking revelation by informing the court that he got the tattoo changed from ‘Winona forever’ to ‘Wino forever’ because of Amber. This came after the claim by Heard that the first time he struck her it was in reaction to a comment she had made about the tattoo. However, he denied the allegation made by Amber and maintained that he would never hit a woman for simply making fun of a tattoo he got years ago. Whatever may be the truth, Johnny continues to sport the tattoo he got for his ex-lover even twenty-nine years after their break up.
