‘Barbie‘ might have come dolled up on the screen, but she strong-armed the box office against Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning movie ‘Oppenheimer‘. Catching the attention of everyone, the film received a great deal of praise as well as criticism. While many celebrities had good things to say about Greta Gerwig’s masterpiece, Shakira admitted experiencing conflicting emotions while watching the movie.
In an interview with Allure, she revealed that the movie was demeaning to her two sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9. The singer explained, “They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”
Shakira continued to explain her perspective on feminism: “I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
Well, there was a lot of symbolism in the film that irked people. Some believed that creating a ‘pink film ‘to support ‘toxic feminism’ was another tactic to denigrate men. However, if the film had been closely viewed, the true meaning could have been discerned. It was a true side of the problems women experience daily rather than an attempt to put down the men. Men are portrayed as dumb and weak characters in the movie, which some people found objectionable, but that was just how the story was presented, to show what happens with women in society.
Shakira shared her outlook on how certain tasks are meant to be done by men and others by women. The singer is raising her two boys as a single mother which shows that she possesses great strength. She wants to empower women through her music without losing their femininity and actual self.

Shakira’s Statement On ‘Barbie’ Sparks Debate
The movie created a lot of wars between the fans. People even started hating the actors Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie for playing such roles. Some even post on X that “Ryan Gosling is just wasting his time if he’s doing that sh*t for money”. Among popular opposition to ‘Barbie‘, US Senator Ted Cruz labeled the movie as “propaganda,” while conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro slammed the ‘woke’ theme as a “flaming garbage heap”.
After this statement by Shakira, some people still agree with her that the movie spreads distorted views of feminism, others disagree with her and believe that she is not trying to understand the true meaning of the movie.
