George R.R. Martin Reveals The One Thing He Wants To Change About His Iconic Book Series

George R.R. Martin is the great mind behind ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ book series, that gave us some of the best TV shows of our era including ‘Game of Thrones‘ and ‘House of the Dragon‘. While we, as fans, may not want to change anything about the book or the TV shows, the man himself seemingly has something he thinks would have worked better if different.

Martin was recently asked if there’s anything he actually wishes to change about his beloved, infamously unfinished book series. And the answer, surprisingly, is precisely what fans have been begging for. Here’s what he said.

During his recent appearance at the Oxford Writers’ House, George R.R. Martin was asked what single element of his books he would change if given a chance. His response was candid, to say the least, and drew a storm of applause.

If I could change one thing about one of my books, I’d have them finished,” the author said. The applause died down as Martin explained that he even envied independent authors who aren’t bound by the tedium of deadlines.

I would’ve loved to have had it finished many years ago. that’s the big thing I think I would change,” he confessed.

This answer touches a raw nerve with die-hard fans of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘, who have been eagerly waiting for the book’s next installment.

More than 13 years ago, in July 2011, the last book in George R.R. Martin’s beloved series was published, titled ‘A Dance with Dragons‘. Since then, the readers have waited and wondered when the next one, ‘The Winds of Winter’, and consequently the final one, ‘A Dream of Spring‘, were coming, but in vain. Martin has not yet set a release date for either.

Updates related to ‘The Winds of Winter‘ from Martin have been infrequent and usually discouraging. Most recently, in July, he squashed rumors of any imminent big news, saying bluntly that the book is still unfinished.

The author also confessed in November that he was having “troubles” with the book and hadn’t written any new pages since December 2022.The expectations from the final two books remain huge, especially after that polarizing ending of HBO’s TV adaptation.

George RR Martin has ensured fans that the books are going to end far differently than the show did, but until he puts pen to paper, fans remain in the dark. Well, we can only wait and watch!
