Robert Downey Jr. took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Academy Awards amid a cheerful audience. The win was graced with a hilarious acceptance speech as the actor won the first ever Oscar of his career.
Though he did not win an Oscar before, Robert Downey Jr.’s performances did not go unnoticed. He was nominated twice for Oscars — once for his role as the legendary Charlie Chaplin in the movie ‘Chaplin’ and his role as a self-absorbed actor in ‘Tropic Thunder’. However, he lost both awards.

Robert Downey Jr. Breaks The Oscar Spell With ‘Oppenheimer’
In the star-studded Oscars evening of the year, the ‘Oppenheimer‘ star gave a signature acceptance speech loaded with humor and sarcasm for his first ever Oscar win.
“I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy — in that order. I’d like to thank my veterinarian — I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here” he began his speech.
“Here’s my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it. Emma made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time — Emily, Cillian. It was fantastic. And I stand here before you a better man because of it. What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important,” he added.
He concluded his speech by sharing a few comments critics have passed on to him over his career. Meanwhile, ‘Oppenheimer‘ also bagged the award for best picture, along with awards for director Christopher Nolan and lead actor Cillian Murphy.
