The 2009 American comedy-drama ‘500 Days Of Summer’, directed by Marc Webb, is still considered one of the most loved films of our era. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in the lead roles, the movie was very successful at the time of its release and has a big fandom.
Deschanel’s character Summer, however, received quite a bit of backlash because of the story’s plot and the decisions her character makes in it. The actress revealed that she was even verbally abused by fans after the film’s release. However, Deschanel recently defended her role during an interview. Here’s what she said.

Zooey Deschanel Opens Up About People’s Opinion About Her Character Summer
Zooey Deschanel played the role of Summer Finn in the Marc Webb-directed film ‘500 Days Of Summer’ and her character received mixed reactions from the audience. While some loved the character, others thought of her as one of the worst characters in the history of cinema. The debate about Summer still continues even decades after the film’s release, as some people perceive her as a cold-hearted villain who strings Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Tom along only to dump him later.
After much criticism, Deschanel recently revealed that she has also faced abuse because of the character she played in the film. However, she also defended the character while talking about it on the Heart Evening Show with Dev.
“Back when (500) days of Summer came out, everyone was like, ‘you’re such a b****, Summer!’,” said Deschanel. “I don’t know if that’s a word you can put on the air, but I was like, very tired of hearing that, because I was like, ‘she’s absolutely not.’”
Deschanel added, “And I feel very, like, protective of that character. So, stop saying that about Summer, guys.”

Zoey Deschanel’s Co-Star Joseph Gordon-Levitt Also Defended Her Character
Joseph Gordon-Levitt played Tom Hansen, a trained architect in the 2009 movie, alongside Zoey Deschanel. Other than the actress herself coming to the rescue of her character, Gordon-Levitt also spoke up in favor of Summer earlier this year.
“People say negative things about Zooey’s character,” he said during an interview with the i. “It gets interpreted that it’s a story about this innocent guy who’s so nice and loves his girlfriend so much, and then she breaks up with him, and how could she do that?” he said.
“But what you really ought to pay attention to is that my character was not listening. He ignores a lot of what Summer says,” Gordon-Levitt added.
