Actress Anne Hathaway has always boldly been candid about her struggles in life and Hollywood as she continues to navigate a mega-successful career decades after arriving on the scene.

Despite having a flourishing name in cinema, Hathaway has also had her share of personal turmoil in life, something she often has talked about. In a recent interview, the actress talked about her struggles as a mother; of dealing with the loss of a child and how much she ached to be a mother.

Talking about a painful experience of losing a chid while she was working on her one woman show ‘Grounded’.

In the 2015 six-week run of the one-woman off-Broadway drama, Hathaway portrayed a pilot who becomes pregnant. She had to play the part of giving birth every night for the play; while she coped with the grief that came with her miscarriage.

Talking to Vanity Fair about it, she says, “The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night. It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine. I had to keep it real otherwise…. So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it—where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone—I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.’ It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.”

She then talked about how she helped others cope with similar experiences. “I thought, ‘Where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated?’ That’s where we take on damage. So I decided that I was going to talk about it. The thing that broke my heart, blew my mind, and gave me hope was that for three years after, almost daily, a woman came up to me in tears and I would just hold her, because she was carrying this [pain] around and suddenly it wasn’t all hers anymore.”

Anne has two sons, Jonathan, eight, and Jack, four with her husband, producer Adam Shulman.

She also talked about her experience as a mother to two young boys and said that she has learned to be more gentle with them.

“When I was younger, the way that I knew how to improve was by being hard on myself. There’s a ceiling to that path. I had to relearn what it means to have drive but to do it in a nurturing way. And that’s when you go, ‘Oh, if there’s a ceiling, I haven’t discovered it yet.‘”

She does prefer to keep her kids out of the limelight and in privacy, and rightly so. “It’s something I feel is not just essential for my health – I’m on a team, it’s my family, and it’s not just about me,” she said.

The actress added, “My family has needs, and one of the needs of children is that they need to be able to define their own lives. It doesn’t even occur to me to link the two up, except through gratitude that they serve each other so beautifully. But they serve each other through me, and not through a space that’s outside of myself.”
