In a recent interview with Variety, Sean Penn gave his opinion on one of the major roadblocks in bringing both the actor’s and writers’ strike to an end is the studio’s desire to use AI in multiple ways. Penn also wants to take down the studio that uses artificial intelligence to exploit the voices of the actors for future use.
Sean Penn also made comments about melting his Oscar Awards, which thankfully he did not do, instead, he gave away one to the Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. Further into the interview, he also had a bizarre rebuttal to Hollywood studios’ desire to utilize artificial intelligence.
Sean Penn Does Not Appreciate The Studio Using AI To Impersonate Actors
The director of the Ukraine war documentary ‘Superpower’ has already been vocal about the issue of AI as it plagues Hollywood. Sean Penn tells the executive of the studios, “So you want my scans and voice data and all that. OK, here’s what I think is fair: I want your daughter’s, because I want to create a virtual replica of her and invite my friends over to do whatever we want in a virtual party right now. Would you please look at the camera and tell me you think that’s cool?”
The star of the TIFF premiere Daddio stressed the immoral use of AI saying, “It’s not about business. It’s an indecent proposal. That they would do that and not be taken to task for it is insulting. This is a real exposé on morality — a lack of morality.”

Sean Penn Is Not The Only Director Disappointed With AI Taking Over
This is not the first time, Sean Penn has openly expressed his dejection for AI and its impact on Hollywood. During the Cannes 2023 press conference for ‘Black Flies’, the Oscar-winning actor said, “There’s a lot of new concepts being tossed about including the use of AI. It strikes me as a human obscenity for there to be pushback on that from the producers”.
Disney reportedly has an AI task force across TV, advertising teams, and its parks. Also moving along with the progressive exchange, even Netflix posted a job for an AI product manager to optimize film and TV production through its “machine learning program.” However, there are traditional filmmakers who are against the idea of AI as a filmmaking resource like Tim Burton and Charlie Kaufman.
