The negativity she received due to toxic workplace allegations plagued her career. She recently talked about the feelings she went through during that tough time on her talk show, and how she fought the allegations bravely.
Ellen DeGeneres Was Deeply Affected By The Hate She Received
During her latest stand-up special show on Netflix, ‘For Your Approval’, Ellen DeGeneres opened up about the battles she has faced since 2020 when the staff from The Ellen DeGeneres Show talked about their allegedly toxic experience working on the set of the show.
“When you’re a public figure, you’re open to everyone’s interpretation. And I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that, ‘What other people think of me is none of my business.’ Because people will say all kinds of things and you have no control over that. But you know the truth and that’s all that matters”, DeGeneres expressed during her standup show.

The ‘Finding Nemo‘ voice actress continued: “If they like you, you’re in, and if they don’t, you’re out. And I’ve spent an entire lifetime trying to make people happy and I’ve cared far too much what other people think of me. So, the thought of anyone thinking that I’m mean was devastating to me, and it consumed me for a long time.”

Ellen DeGeneres revealed she had to go to a therapist to deal with the hate she received. Moreover, her therapist also asked her where she was getting the idea that everybody hated her.
“I said, ‘Well, New York Times, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Us Weekly — I think Elmo may have said something recently on an episode of ‘Sesame Street,” the talk show host recalled.
She said she came across various headlines from famous magazines that spewed hateful comments about her, which got to her mind. DeGeneres said that there are “extremist” people in the industry who have oscillated between love and hate for her over the years, which was a real test of her ego and self-esteem.

“There are people who love you and idolize you, and then there are people who hate you, just really loudly hate you,” she said. “Sometimes, I long for my childhood, when I just had good old-fashioned neglect”.
But as she looks back to one of the worst phases of her life, she realizes that she got through it like a wise person. She called herself “mature” for not taking all the hate to her mind. She continued, “Caring for what people think to a degree is healthy, but not if it affects your mental health. So after a lifetime of caring, I just can’t anymore.“
