Shakira‘s recent divorce with husband Gerard Piqué came off as a shock for many as the singer always seemed to be in a happy relationship. The singer, with her roots in Columbia, has been a symbol of female empowerment throughout her shiny career. After she got married to Pique and bore two children with him, it seemed like a perfect world for her — though not for too long.
The couple recently got divorced after an 11-year-long marriage as Shakira found out about her husband’s infidelity. Though it was a hurtful shock for her, the pop sensation is seemingly recuperating pretty well and proving that she is indeed the queen she has always been considered to be by her fans.
“I Don’t Know Why It Was Dragging Me Down”: Shakira Says She Was Not Focused When Married
Shakira has recently opened up about her post-divorce situation and how she is coping with it. Fans would not be surprised to know that the singer is actually loving being single and away from a toxic relationship.
Shakira said that she is quite happily embracing the newfound single life and reveling in independence after parting ways with former soccer star Gerard Piqué. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the 47-year-old singer opened up about the liberating feeling of focusing on her career without the constraints of marriage.
“In a way, it’s kind of good not to have a husband because… I don’t know why it was dragging me down, man. Now I feel like working. I feel like writing songs. I feel like making music. It’s just a compulsion — a compulsive need of mine that I didn’t feel before,” Shakira said during the interview.
The Grammy-winning artist is doing pretty well with her career as she is set to release her highly anticipated album ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’, despite the heartbreaking end of her 11-year relationship with Piqué. She shares two sons, Milan and Sasha, with Piqué, and is also currently trying to balance parenting dynamics along with her career.

Describing her dynamic with work as a “love-hate relationship,” Shakira revealed the guilt she felt whenever work commitments took her away from her children. “It was kind of, like, a sometimes a love-hate relationship, because every time I had to be pulled into the studio to do my work, I felt that I was leaving my family unattended,” she said.
“There were times when I really didn’t enjoy it. You know, I felt guilt. I felt torn,” she said, adding that being both a musician and parent feels “totally different (than before) even though it’s more challenging, because now I’m in charge of these two kids, these two babies that depend on me so much.”
“And I’m a single mother,” she continued. “I don’t have a husband at home to help out with anything.”
Shakira also said she is grateful for the unwavering support of her fans, which has provided her with a sense of empowerment and motivation. “I feel the fans have really demonstrated their loyalty and, by demonstrating their loyalty and their love, I felt so backed up,” she shared. “They really had my back all this time, and so I feel I owe them big time.”
