James Francis Gunn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 5, 1966. His father, James F. Gunn, was an attorney, and his mother, Leota Lee, was a homemaker. He has five siblings: Sean, Matt, Brian, Patrick, and sister Beth. He graduated with a Master Of Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1995.

Gunn and ‘The Office’ actress Jenna Fisher tied the knot October 7, 2000. Despite getting a divorce in 2008, they remain close friends to date. The ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ filmmaker has been in a relationship with actress Jennifer Holland since 2015. They eventually got married in 2022.

The DC Studios co-head didn’t start out working in the film industry. James Gunn has musical ambitions, leading his band The Icons as the frontman. While the band eventually broke up in the 1990s, Gunn composed songs for ‘Scooby-Doo,’ ‘Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,’ and ‘Movie 43.

Gunn started as a screenwriter, penning scripts for ‘Tromeo and Juliet,’ ‘Scooby Doo,’ ‘Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,’ and ‘Dawn Of The Dead‘ remake. He made his directorial debut with the horror-comedy ‘Slither‘ starring Jenna Fisher. In 2010, he wrote and directed ‘Super’ starring Rain Wilson and Elliot Page.

Gunn was hired to write and direct ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and its sequel. However, Disney fired him due to his history of off-color jokes. But after immense public pressure, Gunn was invited back to complete the trilogy.
