Julia Roberts About Not Attending College
Julia Roberts opened up about a long-laying regret of not attending college. In a conversation published in British Vogue between her and Richard Curtis, the maker of Julia’s big hit ‘Notting Hill’, revealed some lesser-known facts about the ‘Leave the World Behind’ actress. “It wasn’t in my cards,” said Julia.
When Curtis asked if Roberts “wasn’t clever enough” for college, the Academy Award-winning actor laughed. Julia then said that it was because her family didn’t have money. “No, I mean, my family didn’t have the money. And I had no scholarship potential,” she said and added, “That kind of thing. But as my kids have gone through the college process now, and looking for schools and talking about what they are interested in learning more about and all that, it does just fill me with a longing for that academic space.”
She also shared what she would have gone for if higher education was in her cards: “I want to learn about anthropology! Where’s that academic space for someone like me?”

Martin Luther King Jr Paid For Julia’s Birth
Roberts was born in Smyrna, Georgia in 1967 to parents who ran a theater school in Atlanta called the ‘Actors and Writers Workshop’. In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, she revealed that Martin Luther King Jr paid the hospital bill when she was born because at the time her parents could not do it.
She further shared that Martin Luther King Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King were friends with her parents Walter Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus.
Roberts explained that the friendship started when Coretta Scott King “called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids.”
In 2017 Julia did a cover story with People, in which she peeled back a little more on her childhood “My mom worked a full-time job and raised three girls pretty much on her own,” Roberts said about her mother Betty, “My brother [actor Eric Roberts] is older, so he was gone and out of the house. She never showed the strain of it,”.
Julia Roberts Almost Turned Down ‘Notting Hill’
Julia Roberts has been pretty candid with the information that she had almost turned down the role of Anna Scott in ‘Notting Hill‘. The reason behind what would have been a grave mistake is that she felt awkward playing a celebrity.
She explained, “Playing a movie actress, I was so uncomfortable! I mean, we’ve talked about this so many times, but I almost didn’t take the part because it just seemed – oh, it just seemed so awkward, I didn’t even know how to play that person.”
We are sure she would not have that problem this time. The Golden Globes winner revealed that she could not relate to the character at all. She admitted, “Honestly, one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was ‘Notting Hill”.
