Matthew Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick is opening up about just how hard her brother fought his addiction behind the scenes.
In the trailer for the upcoming docuseries ‘The One About Matthew Perry‘, Bowick reveals that the Friends star spent a staggering $7 million trying to get sober. She also shares the loneliness he struggled with and explains why making people laugh became so important to him.

Bowick gets deeply personal while discussing her brother’s lifelong substance abuse struggles. Despite Perry’s fame, success, and ability to make millions laugh as Chandler Bing on Friends, she says he dealt with an emptiness that he struggled to escape.
“My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he couldn’t quite fill,” Bowick said. She then revealed just how far Perry went in his attempts to overcome addiction. “He spent $7 million trying to get sober. That’s how seriously he took his disease.”
Bowick also remembers how acting and comedy gave Perry something positive during his battle. Making other people happy appeared to bring him happiness too. “When he made people laugh, it made him feel good,” she said.

Bowick describes her brother’s story as one filled with both incredible success and painful struggles. “All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them, and that certainly was Matthew’s story,” she says in the trailer. The contrast also plays out throughout the first look at the three-part documentary.

The trailer begins with funny moments from Perry’s career, including clips of him playing Chandler Bing, before moving into the struggles that followed him away from the cameras.
An old talk show clip also shows Perry remembering how badly he once wanted to become famous. “I said, ‘God, you can do anything you want to me. Just please make me famous,’” he recounts. Perry says he later “got a phone call and instantly knew my whole life was gonna change.” But his success came alongside addiction, as he adds, “But God did not forget the other part.”
The project comes three years after Perry’s sudden death at 54, which shocked Hollywood and fans around the world.
