The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was speaking at an SXSW panel on Friday to mark the International Women’s Day. She highlighted how she faced a lot of bullying when she was pregnant with her children with Prince Harry, and had to suffer the same ordeal after both of them were born.

The bulk of the bullying and the abuse that I was experiencing in social media and online was when I was pregnant with Archie and with Lily, and with a newborn with each of them,” the ‘Suits‘ actress said at the SXSW panel on Friday. She was speaking during a discussion about online trolling alongside some stellar speakers like Brooke Shields, Katie Kurich, and author and sociologist Nancy Wang Yuan.

Markle also tried to get the audience involved, including her husband, Prince Harry, and asked them to “wrap their heads around why people would be so hateful“. “It’s not catty, it’s cruel,” she added. “Why would you do that?

Markle gave birth to Prince Harry while she was still a working member of the royal family in May 2019. Two years later, Princess Lilibet was born. But at the time, the couple had quit their royal duties and moved to California to live separately.

Markle has been quite vocal about the struggle she has faced as an actress, as a member of the royal family, as well as after she got married to Prince Harry against all odds. During a particularly infamous interview she and Harry had with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the actress had opened up about being suicidal and accepted that she had contemplated ending her life in part because of the vitriol she had endured.

Later, at a gala in NYC, the actress had also spoken up more about the same. “Look, I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because I know how much loss he has suffered. But I knew if I didn’t say it then I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” the actress had said at the time.

At Friday’s SXSW panel, Markle also took time to appreciate Harry for being an incredible partner. “I’m fortunate that amongst the privileges I have had in my life, I have an incredible partner,” she said. “My husband is such a hands on dad and such a supporter of me and our family, and that I don’t take for granted. It’s a real blessing,” she said.

A day prior to her panel appearance, the couple went on a romantic date at the Sobo house in Austin. In the panel, she was speaking as a visionary female leader alongside a number of other female personalities who have made it big in their respective fields.
