When it comes to holding Hollywood celebrities accountable, Meghan McCain has never shied away from speaking her mind. The former ‘The View‘ co-host and daughter of late Senator John McCain is known for her blunt, often controversial, opinions on everything from politics to pop culture. Recently, she’s been taking aim at a familiar target- Blake Lively.
You might know Blake Lively as the stylish Serena van der Woodsen from ‘Gossip Girl‘, or perhaps as Ryan Reynolds’ equally stylish other half. But now, the actress is stepping into a different light with her role in ‘It Ends With Us‘, a movie tackling the difficult subject of domestic violence.
Meghan McCain Calls Out Blake Lively’s “Insensitive” Promotion
McCain didn’t hold back during a recent episode of her Citizen McCain podcast. Citing her personal experience with helping a friend escape an abusive relationship, McCain expressed concern over Lively’s tone during her press tour.
“If you’re taking on the responsibility of telling the story about a woman in a domestic violence situation, you have to be respectful that you’re representing victims millions and millions of women and men who are victims of domestic violence,” McCain said, clearly unimpressed.
She particularly took issue with a promotional clip where Lively encouraged women to watch the movie. “I think the tone she’s setting in a lot of the press with this, saying, put on your florals and come together, girls.“
McCain said that she doesn’t “want to put florals on and go with my girlfriends and go watch a fun girl movie about domestic violence.” Further, she called the suggestion “very insensitive and, quite frankly, strange.”

McCain Wonders Why Blake Lively Is Famous
McCain didn’t stop there. She also questioned why Blake Lively is even famous, other than for her role in ‘Gossip Girl‘ and her marriage to Ryan Reynolds. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything she’s actually in,” McCain admitted. She added that Lively’s fame seems to come from a “privileged situation” as a “beautiful, blonde white woman.”
McCain’s critique didn’t just touch on Lively’s handling of the film but extended to her overall celebrity status. She was urging her to gain some “humility” and do more “research on what you’re representing.”
“I’m also just fucking sick of hearing about Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively,” she confessed. And honestly, in the age of Instagram feeds and constant media coverage, who can blame her?
Still, ‘It Ends With Us‘ actor Brandon Sklenar defended the film’s female contributors by sharing a post on Instagram. He praised the film’s female contributors for their “hope, perseverance, and for women choosing a better life for themselves.”
