Michael C. Hall built his successful acting career playing two of television’s most unforgettable characters. He first turned heads for his portrayal of David Fisher, a man struggling to reconcile his personal life with his family’s expectations on Six Feet Under.’ After the HBO show’s 2005 conclusion, Showtime offered him a role inDexter the following year.

He played the titular character, a forensic analyst who secretly lived as a serial killer. Given the graphic violence that defined the show, most people would assume it must have been a harder role for Hall’s family to watch. Surprisingly, it was quite the opposite. Turns out, it was Hall’s David Fisher who sparked the most uncomfortable conversations back home in North Carolina.

A Breakout Role That Sparked Unexpected Reactions

Before becoming the face of ‘Dexter,’ Hall earned widespread recognition through HBO’s ‘Six Feet Under,’ which premiered in 2001. The acclaimed drama followed the Fisher family as they ran a funeral home while grappling with grief, relationships, and the complicated realities of everyday life.

Hall played David Fisher, a reserved funeral director whose journey from a closeted gay man to someone comfortable living openly became one of the show’s defining storylines. His performance received widespread praise and helped establish him as one of television’s rising stars.

The role was professionally rewarding, but the same can’t be said of his personal life. Hall discovered that not everyone in his hometown viewed it the same way. Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, the actor came from a fairly traditional Southern background.

While his mother fully supported his acting career, some people around her reacted very differently to the character he portrayed on screen.

Why Friends Felt Sorry For The Actor’s Mother

Speaking to The Advocate in 2004, Hall recalled one particularly awkward encounter during a visit home. He remembered meeting old family friends when one person unexpectedly turned to him and said, “And I just want to compliment your mother, because she has dealt with this so well.”

Hall found the comment both baffling and revealing. The person spoke as though his success had somehow become a burden for his mother simply because David Fisher was a gay character.

He also recalled another incident in which a family friend warned his mother about the entertainment industry, remarking that the theater world was a place “where there are a lot of homosexuals.”

Although the comments were presented politely, Hall understood what they implied. Instead of celebrating his success, some people viewed his role through the lens of their own prejudices.

‘Dexter’ Didn’t Raise The Same Eyebrows

Interestingly, the irony became obvious only a few years later when Hall took the lead role in ‘Dexter’ in 2006. He portrayed a serial killer who stalked criminals, wrapped victims in plastic, and disposed of their bodies after carrying out elaborate murders.

Despite the show’s gory imagery, Hall noticed that the uncomfortable conversations from back home largely disappeared. Looking back, he often points to the contrast with a sense of disbelief.

A character exploring his sexuality, falling in love, and building a family generated concern among some family friends, while a fictional vigilante serial killer proved far easier for them to accept as entertainment.

Hall’s reflections offer an interesting snapshot of television and public opinion during the early 2000s. Back when LGBTQ+ representation was relatively uncommon in mainstream dramas, ‘Six Feet Under’ challenged audiences in ways that the Showtime show, despite its far more disturbing premise, often did not.

Years later, both performances remain defining moments in Michael C. Hall’s career. Yet it was David Fisher and not Dexter Morgan, who sparked the strongest reactions from the people who knew him long before Hollywood and fans did.
