Hannah Montana Messed With Miley Cyrus’ Head
It was in an interview with Spotify’s ‘Rock This’ that Miley Cyrus shared how her role as the teen star Hannah Montana had messed with her head. “And again, like talk about an identity crisis, like I had gone from being a character almost as often as I was myself,” ‘The Last Song’ actress talked of her similarities to the pop star she projected in her series. Miley Cyrus became the lead in Disney Channel’s ‘Hannah Montana’ when she was just 13. The show which premiered in 2006, ended its run in 2011.
In the interview, Miley Cyrus admits to having the idea ‘drilled’ into her head that she was nothing without Hannah Montana. Just like her onscreen character. “And actually the concept of the show is that when you’re this character, when you have this alter ego, you’re valuable. You’ve got like millions of fans, you’re like the biggest star in the world,” the pop star said.
“And then the concept was that when I looked like myself when I didn’t have the wig on anymore, that no one cared about me. I wasn’t a star anymore,” she explained. Growing up as an artist, Cyrus was trying continuously to break from her alter ego character.

Miley Cyrus Struggled To Establish Her Identity
In 2008, the 15-year-old Miley Cyrus did a Vanity Fair cover with just red lipstick and white bedsheets. The image has drawn much controversy and criticism. Similarly in 2013 at the VMAs, Miley had twerked on Robin Thicke, giving people another incident to pick on. But for the ‘Plastic Hearts’ singer, these were ways to establish her own identity. The popstar finally admitted that had a “characterized version of myself”.
The ‘Angels Like You’ singer felt like competing with Hannah Montana who was larger than her. She felt like she would never reach that level of success. “I never created a character where it wasn’t me, but I was aware of how people saw me and I kind of played into it a little bit. Like when I noticed that people gave shit that I would stick my tongue out. When they told me, stop sticking your f**king tongue out, I would do it more,” the artist explained.
