Cher is known for making bold choices in life and always speaking her mind. The 76-year-old singer felt the need to talk about the current political climate in the United States, following the controversial Roe v. Wade reversal. The judgment took away women’s constitutional right to abortion after 50 years.
Addressing the issue, Cher shared her own experiences with miscarriages, the first of which happened when she was 18 years old. She had to be taken to the hospital and operated on. She suffered two more miscarriages in her life. The ‘Believe’ singer questioned what would happen to her in today’s America, and reiterated that “no woman is safe” in the country.
Cher Opens Up About Suffering 3 Miscarriages When She Was Young
Cher explained that her ex-husband Sonny Bono found her after she suffered a miscarriage at 18. The music icon had met him when she was 16 and they got married in 1967. Recalling the traumatic incident, she tweeted, “When I was young I had 3 miscarriages. 1st at 18. I was alone in our house. Son came home & I was sobbing, & rocking on our floor. When I got to Dr I was screaming in pain. Couldn’t even stop in elevator. Dr sent me straight 2 hospital, & in2 operating rm. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN 2 ME TODAY.”
The singer-actress admitted that she never thought she would need to share the painful story of her miscarriages, but the political climate in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade compelled her to do so. She voiced her concerns about how unsafe America has become.
“Never thought I’d need 2. These Insane republicans will kill our WOMEN 4 POLITICS‼️ MOTHERS, SISTERS AUNTS, COUSINS, BEST FRIENDS…NO WOMAN IS SAFE IN AMERICA‼️ SOON NO SANE PERSON WILL BE SAFE. THESE ARE NOT JUST WORDS, NO CLIMATE LAWS, NO NEW POWER GRIDS. GOP=GUNS, FEAR, VIOLENCE,” she wrote.
Cher Had A Strong Reaction To Roe v Wade Decision
After the landmark reversal of constitutionally protected abortion rights, Cher expressed her fear for the women of America. “WHEN I HEARD ROE V WADE WAS REPEALED, I COULDN’T CONTAIN MY ANGER. STILL ANGRY, SAD AFRAID 4 WOMEN OF [U.S. flag emoji],” she tweeted.
Another tweet by her read, “If Every time Men Had Sex, They Risked Death, Physical Disability, A Life Altering Interruption In Their Education, Or Career, & The Sudden Life Long Responsibility For Another Human Being, I Think They’d Expect A Choice In The Matter.”
Cher is just one among many celebrities who have condemned the SCOTUS decision, including Michelle and Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Jane Fonda, among others.
