During a new episode of the Second Thought With Suzy Weiss podcast, Scooter Braun revisited the controversy that erupted in 2019 after he acquired Taylor Swift’s former record label, Big Machine Label Group. The acquisition immediately sparked backlash after Swift publicly stated that the move had “stripped me of my life’s work.” The dispute quickly became one of the most talked-about stories in the music business and eventually led Swift to re-record her early albums as part of her highly successful Taylor’s Version project.

Looking back on that period, Braun admitted that the public reaction caught him off guard. He explained that he experienced a dramatic shift in how people viewed him, saying he went from being “loved and appreciated for over a decade to literally a villain the next night.

I don’t want to go into that, I will say something that will really sum it up that I don’t know if I’ve ever really said that I don’t know Taylor Swift. I’ve met her in my life three times. I have never had a substantial conversation with her in my life. One time, I got invited to a private party by her. She told me she had the utmost respect for me. I told her I had the utmost respect for her. You don’t spend $300 million buying a label that she’s on unless you’re excited at the opportunity to work with her. I will never truly understand that situation, to this day. I wish her nothing but the best.”

Braun emphasized that he never managed Swift and did not have the kind of relationship many people assumed they shared. He explained that the public often reacts with surprise when they learn that the two barely interacted. As it turns out, he never truly knew her beyond a handful of brief encounters. Despite the criticism he faced, Braun said the experience ultimately became a valuable lesson.

Although the dispute remains one of the most publicized conflicts, Braun prefers the lessons it taught him. Years after the fallout, he still does not fully understand how the situation unfolded. But he has chosen to move forward while wishing Swift the best.
