While many fans criticized the finale for lacking large-scale spectacle, Eric Kripke appeared far more interested in delivering emotional resolution than explosive chaos. Instead of providing yet another predictable apocalypse filled with mindless CGI explosions, the creators of The Boys took the complete opposite route.

In his own words, the director focused more on a character-driven conclusion so that characters could actually get their emotional closure. It was quite a risky move, ultimately drawing a sharp line between viewers looking for pure blockbuster entertainment and those seeking a deeper character study. But it seems like Kripke’s vision is backfiring, given the show’s weak ratings that recently made headlines.

The season finale of ‘The Boys’ has received tremendous backlash online following its premiere after scoring one of the lowest IMDb audience ratings in the show’s history. Known for being the greatest superhero satire for many years, the series did not leave many fans satisfied with its conclusion.

Unsurprisingly, the ratings quickly fell into the mid-5 range, making the finale one of the show’s worst episodes thus far. It was especially surprising to see this fall from grace, given the high scores and overwhelming positivity the previous ones received. After years of buildup, many viewers expected a massive, explosive confrontation.

Instead, the finale delivered a smaller-scale and more emotionally restrained ending. Fans also argued that several major storylines—including the virus subplot and political tensions surrounding Vought either wrapped up too quickly or lacked meaningful payoff altogether.

It is important to highlight that fans of superhero movies have praised many episodes in the past for their unexpected twists and turns and violent action. However, many of them noted that the franchise’s last season suffered significantly in terms of the quality and pacing of its episodes.

Amid the slamming, not all opinions about the show’s ending were negative. In fact, many viewers praised the finale for its emotional undertones. Many of the main characters, including Hughie, Kimiko, Mother’s Milk, and Butcher, got more screen time at the end and could get their closure.

Showrunner Eric Kripke also addressed criticism surrounding the finale’s scale in post-release interviews. According to him, the creative team intentionally avoided turning the ending into a fully apocalyptic event. Instead, the focus remained on resolving character arcs and maintaining the emotional themes that defined the series throughout its run.

Overall, even though the finale received quite a few negative comments, the world of supervillains is far from being dead. Amazon Prime Video is currently developing several spin-offs, with ‘Vought Rising’ and ‘The Boys: Mexico’ set to premiere in the near future.

So, even though the end of the main story turned out less action-packed than expected, the world of supervillains and superheroes is just starting its journey. Are you excited for the upcoming ventures?
