Sharon Stone has shared a heartbreaking memory from one of the most difficult periods of her life. While facing a frightening breast tumor diagnosis and preparing for a possible double mastectomy, the actress expected support from those closest to her.
Instead, she says her husband’s reaction inside the doctor’s office told her everything she needed to know about the future of their marriage.
Sharon Stone Recalls The Medical Crisis That Changed Everything

During an appearance on the Person Who Believed in Me podcast, Sharon Stone reflected on the moment doctors discovered tumors in her breasts. The ‘Basic Instinct‘ star revealed that one of the tumors was alarmingly large and that doctors feared the situation could be far more serious than it appeared.
“One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast,” Stone remembered on the podcast. “And the doctor had come out to my house and said, ‘Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they’re all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they’re cancer.’“
Although the doctors were concerned, Stone felt certain the tumors were not cancerous. She recalled pushing back against the diagnosis and insisting she had a say in how the situation would be handled. “I said, ‘I don’t have cancer,'” she recalled. “And he said, ‘You don’t get to decide that.’ And I said, ‘I do. I do get to decide that. I’m deciding.’“
Despite her confidence, Stone chose to proceed cautiously. She decided that if there was even a chance the tumors could be cancerous, she would undergo a double mastectomy. Recalling her mindset at the time, she said, “I am deciding that I will have a bilateral because I’m not f—ing around.“
Stone’s Marriage Never Recovered From That Moment

While Stone was preparing to make one of the biggest medical decisions of her life, she claimed she did not receive support from her husband. Instead, she said he strongly opposed the idea of a double mastectomy. “My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’” she said. “And got up and left the room.” Podcast host David Begnaud asked for clarification, wondering what exactly her husband found ridiculous. Stone explained that his anger centered on the surgery itself. “That I would have a bilateral [mastectomy]. He was furious.“

Begnaud then asked, “Oh, not that the cancer, if it were true, might kill you?” Stone quickly replied, “No, no.” The actress said the issue was the possible removal of her breasts. According to Stone, the doctor stepped in and defended her decision. She recalled the physician telling her husband, “‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down.'” Stone added that she made her position clear, saying, “‘I make the decisions, not you.’“
Looking back, Stone believes the confrontation permanently damaged the relationship. The experience convinced her that the marriage had effectively ended right there in the doctor’s office. “That was the end of the marriage,” she claimed. “That was it. He was done with me then. It was over.“
She continued, “It was just over in the room. You could just tell. It was over. It was just over. He thought I was ridiculous... thought it was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself.” In the end, Stone did not undergo the double mastectomy because the tumors turned out to be benign. However, the ordeal led to another troubling experience.
