“She Can’t Act. She Isn’t Pretty. Why Is She So Hot?”: Producer Barbara Baum Says She Doesn’t Get Sydney Sweeney’s Appeal

Sydney Sweeney is emerging to be one of the rapidly rising stars of Hollywood with some of her acclaimed performances in ‘Euphoria‘ and ‘Immaculate‘ among others. However, the otherwise much celebrated actress has found herself under the scrutiny of one of Tinseltown’s seasoned producers, and the verdict is scorching.

Producer Barbara Baum did not hold back while giving her sharp judgments agains Sydney during a conversation with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin. “There’s an actress who everybody loves now – Sydney Sweeney. I don’t get Sydney Sweeney,” Baum said, setting the stage for her critique.

I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her,” she said during the interview with Maslin. “I watched this unwatchable movie- sorry to people who love this movie  – [this] romantic comedy where they hate each other,” she added referring to Sweeney recent hit ‘Anyone But You‘.

Speaking at the interview right after the screening of her acclaimed 1988 film ‘Dead Ringers’, the producer went on to emphasize her confusion over the actress’ high appeal.

The producer went a step further as she narrated an incident from her producing class at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. A visiting faculty there, she challenged her students to explain Sweeney’s appeal. “She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?” Baum questioned.

Nobody had an answer but then the question was asked, “Well if you could get your movie made because she was in it, would you do it?'” she said, further clarifying that it was a pretty good question because it made her conclude that nobody “walks away from a green light” and her answer would perhaps be in Sweeney’s favor if she has to get a film made.

Despite the scathing criticism, Sydney Sweeney’s appeal in Hollywood is undeniable with her fanbase getting bigger by the day. The fairly young actress remains a prominent figure in the industry though the debate over her talent rages on among industry insiders.

Sweeney, however, continues to carve her path as she also recently got into production with her debut film ‘Immaculate‘. The actress is also rumored to assume roles in blockbuster hits like Marvel’s ‘Spider-Woman‘ and a remake of the iconic ‘Barbarella’.
