As the saying goes, “you only have one shot at making a first impression.” Fortunately for Hollywood, it is known for second takes. When the legendary rapper of N.W.A., Ice Cube, watched the early version of his screen acting debut, he wasn’t seeing what would eventually become a classic movie; he was seeing a career-ending failure that could have very well caused him to back out of the whole project. It took some quick lessons in the magic of filmmaking to prevent that cinematic masterpiece from being thrown away.

It was 1990, and a young, promising directorJohn Singleton, was looking for actors to help him bring his first feature film, ‘Boyz n the Hood,’ to life. Featuring a cast including rising stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube was the essential element that brought the movie to life. In fact, Singleton wrote the character of Doughboy specifically for Ice Cube after a chance encounter during his internship at a television studio. But neither man knew of the creative turmoil that awaited them.

When he showed the rough cut of the movie to his leading man, Singleton received a shocking reaction. Without a finished audio mix, color correction, or proper pacing, the rushes seemed very chaotic to the unprepared rapper.

Thinking he had committed an absolute blunder in his career, the artist became angry and disappointed, calling the unfinished footage, “This is garbage’. You’re just like, ‘What is this s—?’ That’s kind of how I looked at it. I was so mad,” and wanted to walk out of the project.

Singleton kept persuading his lead actor to let him finish editing. This request changed the history of modern cinema forever. Upon its release, the feature became a huge success, earning ten times its production budget.

Moreover, the film led to the historic nomination of John Singleton for the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Furthermore, it helped to launch the careers of its main actors, including Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne.

The impact of ‘Boyz n the Hood‘ shifted American filmmaking forever, propelling its key actors into movie royalty while ushering in a new generation of unapologetic stories from the streets. The film itself became the template for an entire era of hard-hitting social films.

From there, filmmakers traced their creative influence through three decades of celebrated classics and massive blockbusters, ranging from ‘Training Day‘ and ‘8 Mile‘ to the Oscar-winning ‘Moonlight‘ and the electrifying music biography ‘Straight Outta Compton’.
