Here Is Why James Gunn Chooses DC Over Marvel
During the recent interview with Michael Rosenbaum on ‘Inside of You’, James Gunn revealed the reason why he chooses DC superheroes over Marvels. Gunn revealed that Marvel generally preferred not to deal with secret identities for their heroes. It was Spider-Man, who was the first to have a secret identity in the MCU. Gunn said, “There was never a guy with a secret identity until Spider-Man in the MCU. Their Cap was turned into a soldier even though he wears a mask. Iron Man outed himself at the end of the first Iron Man because they don’t want to deal with the secret identity stuff.”
While compared with the DC superheroes, who lived double lives and embraced their secret identities. According to James Gunn, these characteristics add a fantasy element to the movies. Inferring from the example of Clark Kent and how his character played the dual role just with the specs. The director said, “So there is a bit more of a fantasy element to DCU. Because there are these larger-than-life superheroes and you can’t take that. But for me, you know, there’s Superman and Clark Kent. Like they’re two different characters and you have to find a way to deal with them that’s as grounded as possible within this world of DC.”

The DC Universe Teleports The Fans To A Fantastical World
Another advantage that DC has over Marvel, it the entire setup. Unlike Marvel, the entire world of DC is built from scratch, featuring iconic locations like Gotham City, Metropolis, Star City, and Bloodhaven. However, James Gunn believes that the world-building in Marvel is constrained because their superheroes originate from the Earth as we know it, unlike the one Gunn created for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ that transported the audiences to a mystical world.
The ‘Brightburn’ director said, “One of the things I love about DC that excites me is that in a way it’s another alternate history. It is Gotham City and Metropolis and Star City and Bloodhaven, you know, all these different places in this other reality and it makes it a little bit like Westeros in some ways. I love that we get to create true world-building in DC. It isn’t just we’re throwing some superheroes on Earth, so I think that right now is one of the key differences.”
