Tom Hiddleston Says He Channeled Alan Rickman’s Character in ‘Die Hard’ While Playing Loki

Tom Hiddleston has shared an interesting detail about how he brought his iconic character, Marvel’s beloved Loki, to life on screen. While many of us know Loki as one mischievous yet charming superhero, he has a rather unexpected source of inspiration.

During the PaleyFest 2024’s ‘Loki’ cast panel, the 43-year-old actor disclosed that channeling characters like Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber from ‘Die Hard’ and James Mason’s Phillip Vandamm from ‘North by Northwest’ helped him craft his persona on screen.

Those are all characters that are about control and revenge. I might just love those performances as a child. … I just was so drawn to those performances as they seemed to be having such a wonderful time playing these antagonists, I suppose,” Hiddleston said. “And that was part of the charm. They were so charismatic, even though they weren’t at the center of those films,” he added.

Although his initial role was that of a supporting character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Thor‘ and other Avengers films, Loki later gained some heavy significance with his role. Disney+ even went on to design a whole new spin-off series based on his character, ‘Loki‘, which propelled him into the spotlight further.

Tom Hiddleston also played a huge role in getting Loki the attention he deserved with his compelling acting. It took no time for the actor to transform the cunning trickster into a fan-favorite antihero. Throughout the show’s two seasons, Loki’s evolution from a self-centered superhuman to a selfless hero was remarkable.

The finale of the show fixtured a permanent place for him in his fans’ hearts, as he made a sacrificial decision to preserve the universe at his own expense. The finale was satisfactory for executive producer and writer Eric Martin who also praised Hiddleston’s performance for bringing depth in the season’s emotional climax.

However, while fans are asking for more of Loki’s adventures, executive producer and director Aaron Moorhead has hinted that the decision rests with Hiddleston. “We love where we ended it,” Moorhead said, as he asserted that the entire team is content with the series finale.

Loki‘ is available for streaming on Disney+.
