Social Media Is Proving To Be ‘Detrimental’ For Tom Holland
Tom uploaded a three-minute-long clip on Instagram in which he revealed that he’d be going on a social media hiatus. Explaining his reasons, he said, “I have taken a break from social media for my mental health, because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming.” He further added how things he read about himself on the Internet get to his head negatively, “I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online. And ultimately, it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So, I’ve decided to take a step back and delete the app.”
The actor also said that he had previously deleted the app and wanted to share a few things before resuming his break. He called his return a very brief moment only to talk about mental health and a related organization he works with.
Holland Talks About A Mental Health Organization For Teenagers
While narrating his decision to take a break from the social media world, he also talked about the importance of mental health, and a U.K.-based teen mental health charity that he sponsors. The organization named Stem4 offers mental health educational tools like conferences, apps, etc.
“There is an awful stigma against mental health and I know that asking for help and seeking help isn’t something we should be ashamed of but it is something that is much easier said than done,” Holland enlightened his followers. “So hopefully these apps can be your first steps towards being happier and healthier.”
The caption of the video read, “Please take the time to watch my video, and should you feel inclined to share it with anyone who it may resonate with – it would be greatly appreciated. Love to you all, and let’s get talking about mental health.”
His post received positive comments from his star friends. Justin Bieber commented, “Love you man.” While the WWE star Ricochet wrote, “Man, you’re an inspiration to so many. But what matters is your physical and your mental health, so take care and come back better than ever!”
His girlfriend, Zendaya, has also previously talked about the ill effects of social media, and the unhealthy relationship one tends to form with it. “Being on [social media] would kind of make me anxious, or I would start to overthink a little too much. [My fans] want me to … be happy and exist beyond social media,” she told People in an interview.
