For most actors, asking a colleague if a scene is “working” while the camera is rolling on their coverage would be a cardinal sin. But when that colleague is also your fiancée, the rules apparently change.

Tom Holland, 30, revealed a candid behind-the-scenes moment from the set of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ during a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s ‘Good Hang‘ podcast. The revelation centered on a question he posed to Zendaya, 29, that he admits he would “never dream of saying” to any other actress he wasn’t romantically involved with.

The Question Tom Holland Asked Zendaya During Her Coverage

The incident occurred while filming a pivotal scene in the upcoming superhero blockbuster. According to Holland, the crew had already shot his side of the interaction and had turned the cameras around to capture Zendaya’s coverage. As he watched his partner work, Holland felt a sinking sense that the script’s emotional beats simply weren’t landing. “We’re doing her coverage, and I would never ever dream of saying this to an actress that I wasn’t with,” Holland explained. “So I said, ‘Do you think that this scene is working?’

In any other professional context, interjecting during a co-star’s close-up to critique the material could be seen as stepping on toes or undermining the director. But Holland credits the decade-long trust built with Zendaya, whom he met while auditioning for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ ten years ago, for allowing such raw honesty.

Zendaya’s response was immediate and validating. “No, I don’t think the scene is working at all,” she replied.

Empowered by their mutual instinct, Holland escalated the concern. He approached the producers to ask if they sensed the same disconnect. When they agreed, the actor, now emboldened, took the issue to director Destin Daniel Cretton.

I said, ‘Hey, man, listen, I know we’ve been shooting for hours and I hate to tell you this, but I just don’t think that this scene is working. Z and I, what we’re supposed to feel, we’re not feeling it in the moment,’” Holland recalled.

Instead of bristling at the note, Cretton embraced it. Holland praised the director for remaining exceptionally “calm,” listening to the couple’s instincts, and immediately pivoting the production plan. Cretton sent the crew home for the night and stayed behind with a writer to rework the scene.

The gamble paid off. The following day, Holland and Zendaya reshot the sequence. “I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie,” Holland told Poehler.

Reflecting on the incident, Holland laughed at the hypothetical of trying the same tactic with a different leading lady. “It was just so funny. I was thinking about, like, if this wasn’t Zendaya that I was sitting across from… imagine on someone else’s coverage being like, ‘Do you think this is working?’” he said, adopting a mocking tone to illustrate how inappropriate the question would normally be.

The Odyssey actor was effusive about the benefits of working alongside his partner, calling her a “lifeline” in the “wild world” of Hollywood. He praised Zendaya as “fearless” and one of the best actors working today, noting that her ability to toggle between the gritty drama of ‘Euphoria‘ and the physicality of the MCU is a constant source of inspiration.

Zendaya echoed the sentiment in a recent interview with Elle, calling the experience of filming ‘Spider-Man‘ together “a dream.” “I get to go to work every day with my best friend, the person that I love,” she said. “We bring our dogs to work; it’s like a family affair. It’s like coming home”.

For Holland, the incident serves as a case study in why the couple’s rare dynamic, blurring the lines between Hollywood romance and professional collaboration, might actually be the secret ingredient to making the new Spider-Man‘ sequel work. “It’s a lifeline,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine doing what I do without her”.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is scheduled for release later this summer.
