Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost make one of the rare drama-free couples in Hollywood. However, they are no exception to the tight spots that certain industry events tend to put celebrities in. The recent season finale of ‘Saturday Night Live‘ ended with a memorable ‘Weekend Update‘ segment.
While the show featured its traditional joke swap, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che found themselves reading jokes written by each other. Like always, it was sure to lead to some uncomfortable moments. Here’s how Colin ended up making uncomfortable jokes about his own wife on the show.
“Without That Body, What’s The Point Of Listening?”: Colin Jost Gets Awkward While Reading Out A Joke About Wife Scarlett Johansson
The season finale of ‘Saturday Night Live‘ was going quite well until Colin Jost found himself in a particularly awkward position. The ‘Weekend Update‘ segment of the show had the two hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che exchange their jokes and read out loud.
Midway through the show, Jost realized that there’s a joke about his own wife in the note in his hand, and he is obligated to read it out loud as per the show’s rule. “Oh God,” he exclaimed as he realized that he’d have to joke about his wife, Scarlett Johansson.
Though visibly embarrassed, Jost continued with the joke on his note. “ChatGPT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in ‘Her,’ which I’ve never bothered to watch because without that body, what’s the point of listening?” he read out loud, referring to the 2013 film ‘Her‘.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with his AI device, Samantha, voiced by Johansson. Johansson’s character in the film is is only heard and never seen, which is what the center of joke was.

Making Jokes About Wife Scarlett Johansson Has Become An Unfortunate Routine For Colin Jost
Colin Jost has often found himself in this difficult situation where he had to make some awkward remarks about his wife. During the final show of 2023, he was forced to roast his wife of four years.
“New York State now allows movie theaters to sell alcohol,” Jost read. “Which is how I’m finally able to enjoy my wife’s little art movies,” he said as a picture of Johansson in the Marvel film ‘Black Widow‘ appeared on the screen. “I’m kidding, honey. I love all of your movies. And if you ask me, you’re an even better ‘Black Widow’ than Coretta Scott King,” Jost said, clearly uncomfortable by the joke.
In another incident in 2020, he joked about her controversial roles in the Marvel films. “It was announced that Creed singer Scott Stapp will play Frank Sinatra in an upcoming movie. But the good news is, Sammy Davis Jr. will be played by Scarlett Johansson,” Jost joked on live television, shaking his head in disbelief.
The joke stemmed from the backlash that Johansson first faced in 2017 for her role in ‘Ghost in the Shell‘, based on a Japanese anime character. The following year, she was set to play a transgender man in ‘Rub & Tug’, but dropped the project after receiving immense criticism.
