Matt Damon and Minnie Driver‘s short romance was a big deal in the 90s. As Damon lifted his Best Screenplay Academy Award for ‘Good Will Hunting‘ with Ben Affleck, Driver, who also acted in the film did not have the best night of her life as she stood heartbroken from her split with Damon.
More than three decades later, the actress has opened up on her split with Matt and how she felt about it.
Matt Damon And Minnie Driver’s Relationship
Minnie Driver and Matt Damon dated back in the late ‘90s after their love translated from on-screen in the 1997 film to real life. They both played love interests in ‘Good Will Hunting‘.
But as quickly as the two became rising stars thanks to the award-winning movie, their romance quickly burned out—and on a newly public stage. Their breakup was very much public, as Matt admitted to the split in an interview and said, “Well, I’m single. I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends, and I love her dearly….I care about her a lot. We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”
Minnie later claimed that the interview is how she found out about Matt dumping her, a claim that Damon has refused in the past.
“It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah” Minnie said a month later, adding “it seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate. Of course, he was busy declaring his love for me on David Letterman a month previously.”
Years after the relationship, Minnie looked back on the relationship and revealed that the breakup was the reason why she looked particularly sour during the Oscars when their film won.

Minnie Driver Reveals New Details About Her Relationship With Matt Damon
In a recent Instagram post, a video of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon winning the Oscar for Best Screenplay went viral and the video showed Minnie having an upsetting expression. The actress then commented on the video and wrote the real reason why she was so upset during the ceremony.
“Matt had ended our relationship a few weeks before this, and was at the Oscars with his new gf… I was devastated” she wrote, adding “Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film!”
There is no bad blood between the pair as of now. In 2022, Minnie spoke lovingly about Matt and said, “I tell that story with love. Because that was just a sweet romance in the centre of all of that stuff, but had a combustible ending, which then became the focus. Another thing that my parents taught me was there just isn’t any time to sit around feeling resentful or angry, just have to get on. And everybody had a beautiful life.”
