Selema Masekela is the son of Hugh Masekela, a prominent figure in South African jazz music. Hugh was one of the most famous singers to flee South Africa during the apartheid era. He fled in 1960 when he was just 21 years old. Not only this, Masekela’s father lived in exile for the next three decades.
Initially, Selema worked Transworld Magazine, a skateboarding glossy that is now out of publication. Then he became the presenter of a number of television series like ‘Ballbreakers‘. Masekela is a member of the band Alekesam, which has had songs featured on television shows like ‘Entourage‘ and ‘House of Lies‘. His family has a long history of musical accomplishments.
