Why Alexis Ohanian Asked Reddit To Replace Him With An African-American
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was murdered in Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. Floyd was falsely arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin diabolically knelt on Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes while Floyd’s face was lying on the ground and his hands cuffed. His fellow officers also helped the alleged police officer to restrain Floyd. Chauvin ignored pleas from bystanders when they asked him to lift his knee from Floyd’s neck.
Floyd, who already expressed his distress and complained about breathing difficulties, after several minutes stopped talking. It was later found out by another police officer that Floyd had stopped breathing. This incident raged everyone and started the #BlackLivesMatter movement on Twitter to encourage diversity and equality. To support this movement, Ohanian asked the board to replace his position with a black man, when he resigned on June 5, 2020. It was announced on June 10, 2020, that Michael Seibel, an African-American entrepreneur, was named a Reddit board member.
