Who Was David Crosby?
Born on August 14, 1941, Crosby was the second son of the Oscar-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby, and Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, a salesperson at a department store.
He joined the rock band the Byrds in 1964 as one of the founding members. In 1965, they delivered their first number-one hit with Bob Dylan’s Mr. Tambourine Man cover. He then went on to form another band titled Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.
The next year, they won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist for their debut album. Crosby was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on two occasions.

On January 18, 2023, Crosby passed away at the age of 81. A cause of death was not revealed by his representatives. One of his former bandmates, Graham Nash expressed his grief over Crosby’s death.
“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed,” Nash stated. “I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years.”
In 2022, Crosby stated he won’t be performing live as he is getting old and doesn’t have the stamina. One of the last things he tweeted before his death was in reference to heaven and he said it’s crowded.
