Why Did Daniel Radcliffe Want To Kill Harry Potter?

It has been twenty-four years since the Harry Potter literary world was launched. The children’s book turned into an unfathomable part of adult popular culture. Seven of J. K. Rowling’s books that chronicle the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends were adapted for the screen. On-screen, Daniel Radcliffe played the titular character which gave him the fame and the adulation that he enjoys. The films also gave Emma Watson and Rupert Grint the wings to fly!

Along with the name and fame, Radcliffe also received a big fat check for being part of the franchise. Daniel’s net worth also rose to $110 million. Along with that, he established lifelong connections with prominent actors. However, there was a point in time when he wanted to kill off the character to whom he owes his celebrity life.

After receiving the name and opportunities he has, the actor once contemplated finishing off the beloved character. In an interview, he said that the way to end the franchise is to kill off Harry or Voldemort. He said, “I think that’s really the only way [J.K. Rowling] can end it if Harry and Voldemort. Maybe one can only die if the other one dies. I don’t know that for sure. But I’m quite looking forward to doing a death scene if I get that opportunity.”

However, he later realized that he should not have said that idea out loud. Radcliffe said, “I wish I’d never said that I hoped Harry would die. I have started to think his death might be too obvious.”

Surprisingly, the author J. K. Rowling also at a point wanted to kill one of the trio i.e., Harry, Hermione, or Ron. She said, “Funnily enough, I planned from the start none of them would die. Then, midway through [writing the series] — which I think was a reflection of the fact that I was not in a very happy place — I started thinking about polishing one of them off. Out of sheer spite!”

Daniel would not have had the thought of tweaking the script if he would have quit. The film was a huge commitment and all the three leads signed the film when they were children. In an interview, he said, “By the third film, I thought, if there’s a time to get out, it’s now; there’s still enough time for another actor to come in and establish himself. For a while, I thought, if I do all of them, will I be able to move on to other stuff or should I start doing other stuff now?”

In 2019, Radcliffe revealed that the pressure of stardom pushed him into alcoholism. He said, “In my case, the quickest way to forget about the fact that you’re being watched is to get very drunk. And then as you get very drunk, you become aware that ‘Oh, people are watching more now because now I’m getting very drunk, so I should probably drink more to ignore that more.'”
