Why Did ‘Glass Onion’ Director Rian Johnson Not Want ‘Knives Out’ In The Title?

Rian Johnson is a director who has proved his skill in the mystery thriller genre. He has directed films like ‘Brick‘, ‘Looper‘, ‘Knives Out‘ and its sequel, ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.’ All these films have been well received. The latter was released recently on Netflix.

In an interview, the director said that he did not want to include ‘Knives Out‘ in the sequel’s title. The name was tweaked to align it with the popular IP to create more sequels in the future. Let’s find out in detail what Johnson said about the film’s title.

Johnson has been basking in the critical appreciation of his latest release, ‘Glass Onion: a Knives Out Mystery.’ However, he has one complaint about the film.

In an interview with The Atlantic, the filmmaker said that he wanted to make both his current Netflix film and the 2019 film an entity on their own and not just one IP.

I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained,” Johnson said. “Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion.”

He continued, “I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time.”
