Why Did Katie Holmes Divorce Tom Cruise?
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise began dating in April 2005 and a month later Cruise publicly announced their relationship in a now infamous Oprah Winfrey episode. After a five-year marriage, Katie filed for divorce in 2012.
The news of their split shocked fans around the world. In 2005, Katie had planned to convert to Cruise’s religion of Scientology. The next year their daughter Suri was born.
According to HuffPost, a few years later Katie did not want their daughter to be raised in the Scientology religion. The ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ actor was initially frustrated and said, “there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”
However, as the attorney pressed Cruise on the matter, he admitted that Holmes’ desire to keep Suri from Scientology, ” … was one of the assertions, yes.” As per the law, all the divorce documents remain sealed, making it unclear to find the exact reason for their separation.
Some reports suggested that the ‘Batman Begins‘ star had made a “secret divorce deal” with Cruise that forbids her from publicly speaking about their divorce.
Cruise And Holmes Daughter Suri Made Her Big Screen Debut
Tom and Katie’s daughter Suri is now 16 years old. She starred alongside her mother in the newly released romantic flick ‘Alone Together’. It marks her first on-screen appearance.
“I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes said during an interview. “So, I asked her. She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it, and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.
She continued, “That’s the way I direct in general. It’s like, ‘This is what I think we all want – go do your thing.’”
The opening sequence of the film shows Suri singing a cover of ‘Blue Moon’. Holmes said that this will not be her daughter’s only on-screen singing gig. “She actually did sing in ‘Rare Objects,’ which is the film we did last fall,” she said. “Other than that, she’s a 16-year-old kid doing high school.”
