Taylor Swift surprised many people when she chose her younger brother, Austin Swift, to stand beside her as her man of honor during her July 3 wedding to Travis Kelce at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

While the singer could have picked one of her famous friends, insiders now say the emotional decision reflected the deep bond the siblings have shared for years and revealed why Austin has remained one of the most important people in her life despite staying away from the spotlight.

Austin has always lived a very different life from his superstar sister. While Taylor travels the world and performs for millions of fans, Austin has mostly stayed away from public attention. He rarely gives interviews, avoids red carpet events, and lives in a quiet home in Forest Hills, Tennessee.

According to one insider, Austin simply does not enjoy being in the spotlight. “Austin doesn’t like the spotlight. He leaves that up to Taylor. They have totally different personalities.” The source also said Austin felt “highly honored” when Taylor asked him to be her man of honor, although he was also “a little timid about it” because he is naturally shy.

Austin also stepped away from acting after appearing alongside Ben Affleck in the 2016 film Live by Night. Instead, he joined Taylor’s company, 13 Management, where he works behind the scenes. He now handles music licensing deals for Taylor’s songs in television, films, and other projects.

Taylor and Austin did not always share such a close relationship. The brother and sister often argued while growing up in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, before their family moved to Tennessee to support Taylor’s music career.

Speaking on Sirius XM’s The Morning Mashup in October 2025, Taylor laughed as she remembered those childhood days. “We used to get in absolute battles. It was like psychological warfare every single day. I’d try to annoy him so much that he’d lash out and try to get me in trouble; it was a nightmare, but then he learned all the sounds that annoy me.

As they got older, everything changed. “It’s crazy. We work together now, and we’re best friends,” Taylor said. “I don’t know what year it happened, but we just looked at each other and went like, ‘Truce.’” An insider also shared, “Taylor relies on him a lot. He’s one of the few people she trusts one hundred percent. That’s why she’s involved him in lots of her business deals.

One of the biggest examples of that trust came during Taylor’s fight to regain ownership of her master recordings. Instead of sending only lawyers and business executives, she asked Austin and their mother, Andrea, to meet with Shamrock Capital.

Austin has also been part of Taylor’s personal journey over the years. An insider revealed that he became close friends with Taylor’s former boyfriend Joe Alwyn during their six-year relationship. “He was close friends with Joe. He thought he and his sister would end up together.” After Taylor and Joe split in 2023, Austin later formed a strong bond with Travis Kelce. According to the insider, “He’s close to Travis. From the moment [Kelce] got engaged to Taylor he’s called him his brother.”

Kelce has spoken warmly about Austin as well. During the Kansas City Chiefs’ Christmas Day game in 2023, Austin dressed as Santa Claus and surprised him with a rare VHS copy of Little Giants. Speaking on New Heights, Kelce said, “I respect a full commit. It was a full commit. He killed it.” Austin has also joined Kelce on family trips and was spotted with him during what was rumored to be Kelce’s bachelor party in June.

For Taylor, asking Austin to be her man of honor was her way of thanking him for always being there. An insider said she asked him in person, and “it turned into a very emotional moment for both of them.” Taylor also wanted him to know how much she appreciated him. “Taylor made sure he knew just how much she appreciates everything he’s done over the years, especially knowing that many people view him as living in her shadow.”

The source added, “She wanted him to hear directly from her that she has never seen it that way. In her eyes, Austin has always been her equal, someone she deeply admires, loves and respects.” Another insider summed up the gesture by saying, “It wasn’t just about honoring her brother. It was Taylor’s way of thanking him.

Austin may continue to stay away from the spotlight, but his role in Taylor’s life has never been clearer. Whether he is helping with major business decisions, supporting her relationships, or standing beside her on one of the biggest days of her life, he has remained one of the people she trusts the most.
