Sandra Bullock went through one of the hardest periods of her life when her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, was diagnosed with ALS. Randall wanted to keep his illness private, so Bullock could not openly talk about what their family was going through. She carried the secret for a long time before finally turning to one of her closest friends, Jennifer Aniston.

Randall battled ALS in private for three years before he died on August 5, 2023, at the age of 57. He and Bullock had been together for eight years, and he helped her raise her two adopted children. Bullock recently opened up about those difficult years on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.

Randall had asked Bullock not to tell people about his “traumatic diagnosis.” At first, only Bullock’s sister knew what was happening. She explained, “He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to. My sister was the only one who knew for a while. At first I go, “Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet. I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do. So I think not talking for a while was good.”

But keeping everything inside soon became a “huge weight.” Bullock had to care for Randall while also looking after two young children during the pandemic. She said the situation “isolated [her] in the process” and described that period as “a trifecta that was pretty dark.”

She explained, “The entire world was locked in with a pandemic. It was literally like the final diagnosis, even though he was ill for half of our relationship. The diagnosis came almost at the same time with the cloak of the pandemic. So as the pandemic came down, and I have a child with severe asthma, I was panicking. I had two young kids, that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure… I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for a while. It’s a huge weight.” Bullock eventually told Aniston and Jason Bateman’s wife, Amanda Anka, about Randall’s illness.

Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock Became Friends Because of Their Mutual Ex

Bullock trusted Aniston because their friendship had already lasted for nearly three decades. Interestingly, their story started because of a man they both dated. Tate Donovan introduced the two women at a Golden Globes party in the 1990s. Bullock was engaged to Donovan from 1992 to 1995 and later dated Matthew McConaughey. Aniston dated Donovan from 1995 to 1998 before later getting together with Brad Pitt.

The two actresses did not become best friends straight away. Aniston previously said, “I think everything happens in its own time, and I think for whatever reason, life had to happen in both of our worlds the way it did.” They later met again at a mutual friend’s wedding. Aniston recalled, “I sent you a note, and you sent me a shot.” Their history with Donovan never made things awkward either. Bullock revealed that they called him “our former boyfriend” and joked, “You and I both partook of this one human being,” adding “a very patient human being, given that he dated us both.” Aniston joked back, “He seems to have a type.”

Bullock replied, “Talented. Funny. Kind. Introspective. Generous.” She then teased Aniston that she “can be an a**hole but you’re so charming!”. The playful exchange says a lot about how comfortable they became around each other. Their friendship also survived an era when Hollywood often tried to turn famous women into rivals.

Bullock told Vanity Fair, “We were from that time in the business where no one wanted the ladies to be friends. It was about pitting everyone against each other. We were told we weren’t supposed to do that, meaning like and respect and honor each other.” Instead, they grew closer over interior design, practical jokes, lavish trips and even numerology readings.

The friends have never worked together, but they have always supported each other’s careers. Bullock started her production company in 1995 and later helped Aniston when she launched her own. A source told, “Sandra founded her production company in 1995 and was generous with knowledge when Jennifer launched her own company a decade later. They enjoy discussing their business projects together.”

Their bond became even more important during difficult times. The source added, “Sandra was a rock for Jen when she was going through her divorce from Justin Theroux. A lot of people run away during hard times, but not these two.”

Years later, Aniston became someone Bullock could lean on during Randall’s illness. ALS, also called motor neuron disease in some countries, is a rare condition that damages the nervous system and slowly makes it harder for the muscles to work. There is currently no cure. Around half of patients live for about three years after symptoms first appear, although some people can live much longer. Bullock said Randall’s condition changed so much that she started “grieving Bryan four years before he passed.”

There was something that had shifted,” she said. Randall had been sober for 14 years, but as his suffering grew, Bullock told doctors to give him “what he needs.” Bullock admitted that emotionally, she felt as though she had lost Randall before he actually died.

My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill,” she said. She was also promoting a movie while all of this was happening behind closed doors. “I had to release a film at the same time and talk about grief. I saw myself on the red carpet, and I was like, you just look at my face. And I am, I’m a woodblock.”

Through those painful years, Aniston became one of the few friends who knew what Bullock was really dealing with. A friendship that began through a mutual ex in the 1990s had turned into the kind of bond Bullock could depend on when she needed it most.
