Daeron Targaryen became a favorite of ‘House of the Dragon‘s Green faction for being the most charming and courageous of the group. Compared with Aemond’s cruelty and Aegon II’s increasingly brutal behavior, Daeron can seem almost like the exception.
However, Bitterbridge shows a far more sinister side to the young prince.
Bitterbridge Became A Nightmare Because Of Daeron

Daeron’s grief and rage reportedly descended upon him after the death of his nephew, Prince Maelor. He became terrible and violent. The events that ensued were one of the most gruesome episodes of the Dance of the Dragons. Maelor was just a kid when he was killed at Bitterbridge.

The prince was reportedly torn apart by a mob, an act that understandably provoked an explosive response from Daeron. However, Daeron’s revenge was more than just about retribution. Mounted on Tessarion, Daeron attacked Bitterbridge and unleashed the devastating power of a dragon against the town.
The city was destroyed, people were killed, and the settlement was left in a state of unimaginable devastation. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the accounts get darker. Those who had sought shelter in the Great Sept were not spared the violence.
The whole Sept was set on fire, and numerous people were killed inside. The remaining prisoners of war were then shot. It’s hard to see those events and still see Daeron as the young prince who’s known for his bravery.

What makes Daeron’s story particularly unsettling is the contrast between his reputation and his actions. He was remembered as Daeron the Daring, a brave and capable dragonrider, with traits that set him apart from some of his more notorious relatives.

However, Bitterbridge shows that even he could be consumed by grief and vengeance. The difference is that the accounts of the Dance of the Dragons are sometimes contradictory, exaggerated, and biased.
That makes it difficult to treat every horrific detail as unquestionable historical fact within the world of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire.’ But the overarching issue is still there. Daeron was no stranger to the savagery of the Targaryen civil war.
After Tessarion flew over Bitterbridge, the young prince was caught up in the same cycle of revenge that made the entire war a monstrous affair. That’s what makes Daeron a character so interesting. He wasn’t necessarily born a monster. The Dance showed how easily one could become one.
