Colin Farrell Eyes Another DC Role After The Penguin, Wants To Star In ‘Sgt. Rock’ After Daniel Craig’s Exit

After his critically acclaimed performance as Oz Cobb, aka ‘The Penguin‘, in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman‘ and the Max spin-off series, Colin Farrell is reportedly in talks to take on another DC role. The actor is reportedly being eyed for the role of the legendary Franklin John Rock in the upcoming war action film ‘Sgt. Rock.

This news follows Daniel Craig’s departure from the project, which initially stirred speculation about who would take on the role. Now, Farell might be stepping in.

Ever since Daniel Craig left the project, speculations about who would take on the role of John Rock have been going wild. Names like ‘The Bear’ star Jeremy Allen White were floated as potential candidates However, according to Deadline, it seems DC Studios may have found their ideal soldier in Farrell. Moreover, with director Luca Guadagnino directing the project, this version of ‘Sgt. Rock’ promises to be more than just another war movie.

Unlike other superhero universes, where actors playing multiple roles can sometimes cause confusion, this casting choice is unlikely to be an issue. ‘The Penguin’ exists in its own universe of DC storytelling. It is separate from the core DCU. So, Farrell can fully embody both roles without disrupting continuity.

What makes this transition particularly exciting is the stark contrast between the two roles. The Penguin is a power-hungry, street-savvy criminal climbing the ranks of Gotham’s underworld. Whereas, Sgt. Rock is a battle-hardened WWII sergeant, leading Easy Company through the chaos of war with unwavering courage.

The tonal differences between these characters are night and day. However, fans and the DCU believe in the actor’s ability to take on both roles. His ability to disappear into roles has already been proven in ‘The Penguin’, where audiences hardly recognized him under layers of prosthetics and a Brooklyn accent.

From an industry perspective, this is also a smart move for DC Studios. Fans love to see familiar faces. Marvel has also done the same with Chris Evans being cast as both the human torch and Captain America. Now, the MCU will bring back Robert Downey Jr. in a villainous role as Dr. Doom.

Will Colin Farrell’s Dual DC Roles Affect ‘The Penguin’ Season 2?

One question that all fans have despite the excitement is what this means for ‘The Penguin’ Season 2. The first season was a massive success, with Colin Farrell’s performance earning him a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics’ Choice Television Award. Despite the show’s achievements, however, there has been little movement on a second season.

‘The Batman Part II’ has already been delayed multiple times and is now set for release in October 2027. If Farrell commits to ‘Sgt. Rock’, it could further push back production on ‘The Penguin’ Season 2 even further. Still, given the overwhelming success of the show, it’s hard to imagine HBO and Warner Bros. letting the project die. All in all, Farell’s reported casting is an exciting development for both his career and the DCU.
