DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’ delivers a disturbing conclusion that leaves Matt Hagen’s future far more terrifying than his tragic transformation initially suggested. What begins as a story about an actor desperate to restore his appearance eventually becomes a nightmare about obsession, identity, and a monster that may be capable of much more than anyone expected.
‘Clayface’s Transformation Has Made Him More Dangerous

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Watkins explained that Matt’s powers have grown significantly after the events of the film. When asked about the possibility of Matt creating another person from his own substance, the director confirmed that something had changed.
“Yeah, there’s been some sort of growth,” Watkins explained. He added, “Maybe there’s just more of Matt after Caitlyn activates the kill switch“. The implication is chilling.
Rather than successfully eliminating Clayface, Caitlyn may have inadvertently triggered an amplification of his abilities. Matt can now use a portion of himself to create another person, making his shapeshifting powers even more unsettling.
Matt Hagen’s Acting Skills Make His Powers Even Scarier

Watkins also discussed how Matt’s background as an actor influences his ability to impersonate other people. Unlike a shapeshifter who simply copies someone’s appearance, Matt must also reproduce their voice and mannerisms convincingly.

“When he first becomes Eddie Marsan’s Frank, he gets the voice wrong before he gets it right,” Watkins revealed. The director described the combination of Matt’s acting talent and supernatural abilities as particularly interesting, explaining that “the superpower has a superpower.”

It is a clever idea that makes Clayface more than just another DC monster. Matt was already skilled at becoming someone else on screen, but his transformation allows him to take that ability to horrifying extremes.
Although a future DCU appearance has not been confirmed, the ending leaves the door open for a much more powerful Clayface. And if Matt continues using his abilities to manipulate the people around him, his greatest threat may be his ability to make anyone believe he is someone they trust.
