John Stewart‘s role in ‘Lanterns’ may be about to take a turn for the worse. John has now got access to both a Green Lantern ring and Hal’s holographic guidance. The next few episodes may reveal what it’s like when John is not just an observer, but a Lantern as well.
The most difficult thing might not be learning how to use the ring, if the prevailing theories are correct. It might be deciding whether or not John can contain it.
John Stewart Could Be An Unofficial Green Lantern
One intriguing possibility is that John discovers something important inside Hal’s storage box, potentially a lantern capable of charging his ring. That would solve one immediate problem while creating a much bigger one.

The Guardians are not going to just hand over an Earthman to take possession of a Green Lantern ring without a word of explanation. That might mean John will be working in the field without the Corps while getting schooled by Hal’s hologram.
It would also create an interesting twist for the last few episodes, as John is a Green Lantern, but not officially recognized as one. That may all change when he faces off against Sinestro. If John is able to beat him and hand him over to the Guardians, the Corps may be left with no choice but to admit what he has done.
This might mean that John will become the second Earth Green Lantern, after Guy Gardner. This is where it can get a little messy.
Becoming A Lantern Could Cost John His Family
John’s family has already had to deal with the concept that he may be meant for something greater. That tension may be too much to ignore if he’s fully on the Green Lantern bandwagon. His brothers might interpret the ring as a sign that John is rejecting his family for this mysterious vocation.

That might cause John to feel all alone, just as Hal did in his life. The difference is that John would still have Hal’s hologram around to guide him. That could become one of the show’s most interesting relationships. Hal is gone, but his influence lingers, aiding John in understanding what the ring requires of him, and reminding him of the cost of wearing it.
There’s even a greater mystery inside that storage box. box. If it contains some kind of pocket-dimension technology, it could attract the attention of Rick Flag Sr., potentially connecting John’s Lantern story to another corner of the DCU.
It is just speculation at this time. If ‘Lanterns’ is aiming to make John Stewart the official Green Lantern, the final episodes could make that transformation much more personal.
