Jessica Lange is officially heading back to ‘American Horror Story‘, but Ryan Murphy had to agree to one major condition first.
Despite Murphy previously claiming that the 77-year-old Oscar winner requested a “musical number,” Lange has now shared the real deal behind her return. She also casually revealed that she plays a secret fifth character in season 13 because four iconic roles were apparently not enough.
Jessica Lange Reveals Her One Return Condition
Lange opened up about her comeback during Tuesday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, just days before ‘American Horror Story‘ season 13 premieres on FX on Thursday. Murphy originally approached her about reprising Constance Langdon, the season one character who introduced Lange to a whole new generation of fans in 2011.
“Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back,” Lange told Kelly Ripa and her ‘American Horror Story: Asylum‘ costar Mark Consuelos. “First, he talked to me about playing [season 1’s] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did. But I said I’ll come back if I can do all four characters.”
Murphy recently said Lange wanted a “musical number” as part of her grand comeback. However, she did not mention that request during the interview. According to Lange, her one firm condition was getting the chance to revisit all four of her major American Horror Story characters. Honestly, that sounds like an even bigger win for fans.

Four Iconic Characters Are Returning
Lange first played Constance in season one before becoming Sister Jude Martin in Asylum. When Consuelos asked, “The nun?”. Lange replied, “Yes, from our season, yes!”. She then cleared up which version of Jude fans will see, adding, “But not in the habit. She’s in the later part of the season; she’s institutionalized herself, when she’s a patient there.”
The actress later played powerful witch Fiona Goode in 2013’s ‘American Horror Story: Coven‘ and circus leader Elsa Mars in 2014’s ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show‘. Freak Show became the final season she led before making a guest appearance in American Horror Story: Apocalypse in 2018.
Lange said “everybody is a returning character, pretty much” in the new season. Getting back into her old roles also turned out to be fun. She said it “was great because I like all four of those characters. It was fun to play them, and, coming back, it was great to do them again.”

A Mystery Fifth Character Comes In ‘American Horror Story’
Four familiar faces apparently weren’t enough, because Lange has also added a completely new role to the lineup. “I threw in an extra, that’s kind of a mystery character,” she teased, confirming for the first time that she plays at least five characters in season 13. Ripa wondered whether the mysterious role could lead to something “for the 14th season,” but Lange quickly shut down the idea by repeating, “No!” before the show cut to a commercial break.
Lange had long denied that she would return to the Murphy-created series after remaining one of its biggest fan favorites. She eventually agreed to reunite with several American Horror Story regulars, including Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Evan Peters, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Jamie Brewer, Frances Conroy, John Carroll Lynch and Emma Roberts, among others.
Murphy also made it clear that season 13 will not simply recycle one of the show’s most popular chapters. “I didn’t want to just do a Coven reboot,” he told Vogue in August 2026. “Everybody thinks that’s what it is; it’s not. I was very interested in the greatest villains we’ve done.”
Season 13 already looks like a major treat for longtime ‘American Horror Story‘ fans, and Lange playing five characters only makes the comeback more exciting. The mystery surrounding her new role adds one more reason to tune in. Now, fans will have to wait and see how Murphy brings all these worlds together.
