Jessica Lange is returning to ‘American Horror Story‘ for Season 13, but she gave co-creator Ryan Murphy one clear condition before accepting his offer.
The actress will reprise all four of her previous characters and add another musical performance to her long AHS history.
Jessica Lange Asked for A Musical Number in AHS Season 13
Season 13 will bring back Constance Langdon from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven and Elsa Mars from Freak Show. Murphy designed the upcoming chapter as a “greatest hits season,” with Lange’s characters playing a major part in it.

Murphy knew he needed Lange to make his idea work. So, he invited her to dinner and pitched the season to her. Lange agreed, but only after making sure she would get another chance to sing on the show.
“I just thought the number 13 was infused with so much stuff in the horror genre, and I wanted to do a greatest hits season,” Murphy told Vogue. “I didn’t know what it was, but I knew that I could only do it with Jessica. So we had dinner … and I pitched her, and she said, ‘Great. I’m in as long as I have a musical number.‘”

Lange’s request should not surprise longtime AHS fans. Sister Jude performed a twisted version of Shirley Ellis’ “The Name Game” in Asylum, while Elsa Mars sang several songs throughout Freak Show. Her performance of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” remains one of the show’s best-known musical scenes.

However, Lange once seemed certain that her time in the franchise had ended. Following her run as Elsa Mars, she discussed her future during a 2015 PaleyFest appearance and told fans that she had no plans to return.
“We’ve had a great run,” she said at the time. “I have absolutely loved doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I loved the writers, actors, Ryan [Murphy], the whole insanity of it… to cut to the chase, yes, I’m done.”

Lange eventually returned as Constance Langdon for two episodes of Season 8, Apocalypse, but another regular role continued to feel unlikely. She remained publicly against revisiting the FX series as recently as February 2025, when her reaction to a question about Season 13 made her position clear.
Murphy noticed a change when he later took Lange to dinner to discuss the new season. For the first time, he heard her speak about the series in a nostalgic and sentimental way.
“She was telling me about how everywhere she goes, young people just bombard her and ask for autographs because they love that show so much,” Murphy told Vogue. “She said some funny thing about how, ‘Nobody comes up and wants to talk to [her] about ‘Blue Sky’ or ‘Tootsie’. They just want to talk about ‘American Horror Story.'”
Lange’s performances have already earned her major awards recognition. And now, her return to four familiar roles, along with a new musical number, makes Season 13 a major homecoming for the AHS favorite.
