Some fans may not have anticipated the speed at which the DC Universe is moving forward. The upcoming sequel to ‘Superman’, ‘Man of Tomorrow’, is set in a relatively short time after the events of the 2025 blockbuster, as DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed.

The news provides fans with a better understanding of how the new DCU timeline will be connected as it grows.

DCU Timeline Won’t Skip Years Ahead For ‘Man Of Tomorrow’

The update came after a fan asked Gunn on Threads how much time passes between ‘Superman’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’. The sequel is set to be “basically real-time,” Gunn said. When another user asked for clarification, the filmmaker clarified that he was referring to the summer of 2027, which is near the movie’s actual release date.

It’s a small detail, but a big deal. The DCU doesn’t seem to be rushing its characters or storylines several years down the road; instead, it seems to be letting them develop naturally. Which means that viewers can expect to see the repercussions of the film’s actions in the next Clark Kent story. The idea is similar to Gunn’s overall vision for the franchise, as it’s all tied to a shared and continuously evolving timeline that spans movies and TV.

‘Superman’ premiered in July 2025 and managed to launch the rebooted DC Universe with David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The movie concluded with Lex’s downfall when his plot to frame Superman was revealed, trapping the iconic villain behind bars.

However, this peace is not to be for long. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ will be bringing Brainiac, one of Superman’s most dangerous enemies. Played by Lars Eidinger, the cosmic villain is known for collecting knowledge by shrinking and capturing entire cities and civilizations.

Superman and Lex Luthor will have to work together in uneasy harmony to thwart the threat. There’s also a lot of DC content coming out before the sequel. The shared universe will be further developed as ‘Supergirl’ premieres in June 2026, featuring Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El. HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ will also keep the momentum going.

However, for those who are looking forward to seeing what the DCU will do next, Gunn’s latest update brings some peace of mind: the story won’t be moving forward. Instead, the next chapter starts almost right where the previous chapter ends.
